Hay Bale Fire

At 16:31 on February 4th, 2019 Franktown Fire Protection District, Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Protection District, Larkspur Fire Protection District and Wescott Fire Protection District were all dispatched to a possible residential structure fire in the 15000 block Spring Valley Rd. in Douglas County. While en route, Larkspur and Wescott were canceled due to their distance from the incident. El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center and Douglas Regional 911 Communications Center dispatch advised all units that approximately 10 bales of hay were on fire. Battalion 2202 en route reported a header of light brown smoke and requested an additional tender to respond. Franktown Fire then advised that they already had a second tender en route. On scene Battalion 2202 arrived on scene at S. Spring Valley Rd. at E. Palmer Divide Ave. just across the county line with hay bales on fire close threatening a structure. Battalion 2202 took Spring Valley Command and assigned Engine 2212 and Engine 181 to fire attack and Tender 181 and Tender 182 to backpack water to the scene. Chief 182 arrived on scene several minutes later and assumed command. The property owner volunteered to use their Bobcat to break apart the bales of hay, for easier access to the flames. Crews worked an extended time with hot spots and overhaul. The fire was officially deemed under control at 20:05. No injuries were reported and no extension to any structures.
