North Hogback Fire
North Hogback Fire
Around 15:00 on October 14th, 2015 West Metro Fire Rescue was dispatched to a brush fire on the eastbound side of C-470 east of Bowles Ave. Engine 13 arrived and reported a working grass fire moving west, and started a direct attack with Brush 13. The fire quickly spread up the hogback prompting a resource request for 3 additional engines and 2 water tenders. The fire was split into Alpha and Zulu divisions with Type VI engines and progressive hose lays used. Water supply and staging was established, and a second radio channel was assigned. The fire crested the hogback and units responded into Ken Caryl Ranch for structure protection and fire attack. Engine 4 was assigned as the “North Ranch Division” with Brush 11 & Engine 15. Eastbound C-470 was shut down for fire operations by CDOT until the next morning. Rampart helicopter was order and made numerous drops on the fire. By sunset the fire had laid down and hand crews were on scene to assist with constructing line and mopping up. The fire burned 35 acres with no structures burned. The cause of the fire was likely sparked by passing traffic from investigators.
