Denver Rockies Inn 2nd Alarm

On April 1st, 2016 at approximately 17:00 Denver Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the former Rockies Inn on Evans Ave. near I-25. Engine 24 arrived on scene and found an abandoned three-story motel with heavy fire showing from everywhere, and laid dual lines across Evans Ave. Truck 19 set up on Dahlia St. on the bravo side and Engine 22 laid dual lines from Evans Ave. and Dahlia St. Truck 16 positioned on the Delta side and were suppled with dual lines from Engine 5. With all hands going to work command transmitted a 2nd Alarm and declared a defensive strategy. Truck 19 reported a collapse on the Bravo side and exposure protection was needed. Truck 22 set up on the Bravo side and was supplied with dual lines from Engine 16. Engine 3 reverse laid 5 inch supply line from Tower 15 across the I-25 overpass to a plug at Evans Ave. and Clermont. Blitzfire’s were placed on the delta side by Engine 5 and the Charlie side by Engine 22. The T shaped Rockies Inn is very close to two different commercial buildings, both were in considerable danger of becoming involved with fire. Tower 23 was assigned to the Charlie side and supplied by Engine 15. At 17:38 the Hold Order was announced to all companies, Chief 5 and Chief 6 to split the city in the half for chief coverage from Station 16 and Station 26. Ops 1 responded to the scene and a minimum of 1 Truck & 2 Engines were moved up to cover each of the 6 city districts, including Tower 27 to Station 16. Traffic was slowed to a crawl on I-25 and the major streets in the area for several hours. The fire was controlled within 45 minutes and only minimal damage to an exposure occurred. No injuries were reported.

1st Alarm: Chief 3, Chief 4, Ops 2, Engine 24, Engine 22, Engine 5, Tower 22, Truck 16, Tower 19 & Rescue 1

2nd Alarm: Chief 2, Chief 7, Engine 16, Engine 19, Engine 3, Tower 15, Tower 23 & Hamer 1

Special Call: Ops 1, Engine 12, Engine 15, Engine 23, Tower 1, Air/Light & Arson
