In an effort to regenerate prairie grass, eliminate weeds and improve wildlife habitat, firefighters from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted a controlled burn at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Commerce City on March 12th, 2016. Smoke could be seen across the metro area as 30 firefighters from six agencies worked to mitigate approximately 1000 acres while steering clear of big bruding bison. In addition to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service, Arvada Fire Protection District, Denver Fire Department, Littleton Fire Rescue and Lyons Fire Protection District also assisted with this endeavor.
