West Metro Structure Fire

On September 29th, 2023 at 02:18 West Metro Fire Rescue Engine 1 was dispatched for an outside fire in the 5400 block of W. 13th Ave. in Lakewood. Jeffcom upgraded the incident due to multiple callers reporting a building on fire with explosions and possible parties inside. Engine 1 arrived to a two-story abandoned office building fully involved with defensive fire conditions, secured their own water supply and deployed their deck gun for offensive exterior attack. Engine 3 arrived and secured a second water supply. A second alarm was called with fire close to nearby townhomes, but those structures were not affected. A complication was an open natural gas line that was feeding the flames. Once it was capped, firefighters were able to work on extinguishing the dozens of hotspots inside. A third alarm was also requested, but was cancelled before the 3rd Alarm response arrived on scene. Firefighters worked several hours with hot spots and collapse issues.
