When the old Station 3 was being demolished, the “3” was saved and integrated into the new station’s outside wall, maintaining a piece of history.

Jim Schaefer Memorial

The memorial is located inside Station 3 for Lieutenant Jim Schaefer (676). Jim passed away on September 10th, 2017, after a year-long battle with liver and pancreatic cancer. Jim served 20 years with the department, and as a lieutenant at Station 3.

Fire Station 3 (Station 53) was located at 7300 Kipling St. in the Kipling Heights area. The site was purchased by the district on November 10th, 1956, constructed in 1962, and placed into service with a dedication in 1963. This station was remodeled in 2009 and the full station was replaced in 2020 with a scheduled opening in 2022. (E-0008) 2006 Pierce Contender (19775) 1500 GPM (Waterous) pump, 750 gallon water tank and 20 gallon foam cell. Reassigned as a Reserve Engine. Engine 3 served as the dedicated RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) on structure fires within the District, Engine 56 for a short time, and later served as Engine 53.

Shown here running as Engine 53 (E-0008), and also ran as Engine 56 for a short time. Engine 53 mascot is “The Hose Apes”. Engine 53 also ran out of Station 56 as the new station was being rebuilt in 2021. Engine 53 was replaced in 2021 with a new Pierce engine.
