After four months of arduous training, the East Metro Fire Training Academy graduation was held on June 8th, 2014 at the Bennett Recreation Center. Despite heavy rain, rolling thunder and a nearby tornado warning, 30 recruits took the oath of service and pinned on their badges in front of family, friends and fellow firefighters. Cunningham Fire Protection District Chief Jerry Rhodes, the guest speaker, welcomed the fledgling firefighters to the fire service. He reminded them to be safe, not make dumb mistakes and joked that the wild weather may press them into service any minute after duty crews left the ceremony for a house hit by lightning. The new firefighters from Class 2014-1 will serve in Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue, Sable Altura Fire Rescue and Strasburg Fire Protection District.
