At 14:26 on June 1st, 2018 MetCom alerted the east I-70 corridor to an unknown fire at 31928 East Quincy Ave. in Arapahoe County. Additional 911 callers reported a 1-acre grass fire moving quickly through the open space. A large plume of smoke was visible and mutual aid from Aurora and South Metro responded. Upon arrival crews found a 10-acre fire growing at a moderate to rapid rate of spread in difficult terrain with no structures threatened. Chief 91 assumed command assisted by IDT1 and split the fire into two divisions. Chief 92 was assigned to the East Division and Battalion 41 was assigned to the West Division. Battalion 41 was assigned as Safety and Battalion 61 was assigned as Lookout. IDT 2 managed the staging area and additional aid was requested from Elbert County. After several wind shifts and a rapid run, air resources were requested. A front loader was used to cut line around the perimeter, which was reinforced, by a wet line. After containment was achieved, the MMA continued to fly the fire for recon and suppression aircraft were cancelled. The fire was 100% contained at 102 acres by 17:00 with extensive mop-up required. No injuries were reported, no structures were threatened and the likely cause was a downed electrical wire.
