High Plains Fire
On June 9th, 2026 at 15:40 Deer Trail Rural Fire Protection District and the I-70 corridor responded to a large brush fire on Hwy. 36 and mile marker 118 in Arapahoe County. Brush 31 arrived to a grass fire along burning along Hwy. 36 and spreading onto the High Plains Raceway property and a row of stacked tires. The grass fire was fueled by hot, dry, and windy conditions and was quickly contained to roughly 5 acres, but the tires continued to burn for several hours. A safety perimeter was created around the burning tires utilizing multiple fire apparatus and the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Tango Alpha Helicopter was requested for assistance and to the Red Flag conditions and an extensive scene, additional resources was requested to assist from Agate Fire Protection District, North Central Fire Protection District, South Metro Fire Rescue, Aurora Fire Rescue, Southwest Washington County Fire Protection District. No injuries were reported and the track was not damaged. The tire fire put a large plume of dark smoke which was visible for several miles in all directions.
