Hogback Wildland Fire
Hogback Wildland Fire
At 15:45 on July 7th, 2016 Golden Fire Department was alerted to a wildland fire in the area of I-70 & C-470 with multiple 911 calls reporting flames and smoke on the north side of the hill on the hogback. Crews arrived and set-up on westbound I-70 before Hwy. 93 exit at mile marker 259 with 2 to 3 acres already involved with active fire on steep terrain involving scrub brush, pine trees and grass. I-70 was closed down for westbound traffic at C-470 allowing a safe environment for an anchor point, command and staging. Attack on the fire consisted of progressive hose lays and hand crews. Command requested a helicopter (2 Tango/Alpha) for water drops, which dropped over 20 buckets of water on the fire with crews working a extended overhaul on hotspots. The cause of the fire were from possible debris that hit a power line causing them to arc and drop sparks into the area from some major transmission lines directly over the fire.
