Lakewood I-70 Accident

At 16:53 on April 25th, 2019 West Metro Fire Rescue responded to a accident involving multiple vehicles with fire at eastbound I-70 at Denver West Colorado Mills Parkway in Lakewood. Jeffcom advised they were receiving multiple 911 callers, and Engine 2 advised smoke in the air from Colfax Ave. Engine 5 arrived on scene to a large fire with multiple fully involved cars, multiple injuries, and lumber on the highway, under the Denver West Colorado Mills Parkway bridge on eastbound I-70. District 1 arrived and assumed command in the offensive strategy with Engine 5 & Engine 6 on fire attack, command requested 5 additional medics to the scene with an MCI (Mass Casualty Incident), and requested CSP and CDOT to shut down the highway. Crews worked heavy fire with several water supplies and attack lines, and with heavy amount of diesel fuel leaking from the tractor trailers, defensive operations started until that was controlled and safe for firefighters to resume offensive operations. A reported 10 total injures, with seven patients transported including one firefighter, all transported to local hospitals with unknown injuries. The crash involved 4 semis and 28 vehicles, and four reported fatalities. The driver of the semi that started the accident was arrested on investigation of multiple vehicular homicide charges. Traffic was originally back-up on eastbound I-70 before the accident due to another traffic accident scene involving a school bus and semi at eastbound I-70 at Ward Rd. that accident had several fire departments on scene including Arvada, Fairmount, Golden and West Metro.

Crews worked overnight and into the next day (April 26th) with overhaul on hot sports and recovery. Ace Towing & Denver West Towing worked on clearing debris from the accident scene with CDOT crews completing the repairs of the damaged pavement, with repaving the asphalt, and I-70 was re-open in the afternoon.
