Poudre Fire Authority was formed in 1981 with the consolidation of the Fort Collins Fire Department and the Poudre Valley Fire Protection District.

Poudre Fire Authority, Wellington Fire Protection District, and Fort Collins 911 have a inter-agency relationship with communication and dispatch on one channel, joint training, and shared station naming system, including Station 16, Station 17 & Station 18. PFA & WFPD will still operate independently and serve their communities. 

Poudre Fire Authority has automatic and mutual-aid agreements with Greeley Fire Department, Livermore Fire Protection District, Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District, Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, Wellington Fire Protection District & Windsor Severance Fire Rescue.

Poudre Fire Authority is dispatched by Fort Collins 911 (FC911).
