Goltra Fire
Goltra Fire
On August 20th, 2024 at 16:11 Jeffcom dispatched Golden Fire Department to a reported vegetation wildland fire at 20800 Clear Creek Canyon Rd. Chief 22 advised that the fire is in the Golden Gate Fire Protection District north of the highway on top of the canyon. Golden Gate Fire Protection District units arrived and took command with fire in vertical terrain that was hard to get to and requested air resources for fire attack. Jeffcom advised that Fort Collins had a single Blackhawk helicopter available, but only for an hour and was not used. Chief 501 and Command 503 provided lookout from the Buffalo Bill’s overlook and advised the winds were starting to pick-up and moving the fire down into the canyon. In the evening crews worked with down-canyon winds that caused erratic fire behavior forcing firefighters off the fire and a full closure of Hwy 6 in both directions from Colorado 58 and Hwy. 119. Crews worked in challenging terrain with rattlesnakes and air support was requested the next day with water drops. The fire may have been caused by a lightning strike at the top of the mountain. The fire was put at 100% contained and burned 205 acres. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office took command of the fire at 07:00 on August 21st, 2024 and kept it until 18:00 on August 22nd, 2024 when the fire was declared contained.
