Tom Bay Fire
On July 11th, 2018 9 units and 14 personnel from South Metro Fire Rescue assisted Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue with the 108 acre “Tom Bay Fire” in Arapahoe County. SMFR was among 16 agencies and approximately 100 personnel on scene that worked to fight the fire, protect animals and structures. 2 aircraft were used including a helicopter that made water drops and a reconnaissance airplane that mapped the fire and identified the hottest areas that firefighters needed to address. 5 homes received mandatory evacuation orders and 18 homes received pre-evacuation orders. Because of the large response and aggressive firefighting, no injuries occurred and no structures were damaged, despite the fast moving fire. Heat from agricultural equipment accidentally started the fire.
