On March 13th, 2025 at 12:51 Ellicott Fire Protection District was dispatched to a small outside fire in the 3200 block of S. Meridian Road. Approximately 3 minutes later at 12:54 – the incident was upgraded to a large outside fire response which added Cimarron Hills Fire Department, Falcon Fire Protection District and Schriever Air Force Base Fire & Emergency Services. At 13:08 upon arrival of multiple fire units Cimarron Hills Chief 1300 established command while providing the update of around 10-15 acres involved due to extreme weather changes and heavy wind. Fire evacuations were ordered in a three-mile radius of the northeastern edge of the fire, and at 20:00 hours command was transferred to Ellicott’s Fire Chief 3300. At 21:30 hours as forward progression of the fire had been stopped, all out of county agencies and several other in county were released, as well as several crews were swapped for overnight operations. Crews worked diligently throughout the night and following days to assure 100% containment. At approximately 20:30 hours on March 14th, 2025, in the evening all remaining fire units cleared and went into a fire patrol with units from Ellicott patrolling throughout the night. At 11:09 on March 15th, 2025, the fire was ruled 100% contained. During Fire Operations on March 13th, 2025, investigators from Ellicott FPD and City of Fountain FD joined by deputies from El Paso County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into the cause and subsequently determined the cause to be accidental. An unknown total gallon of water were used during this incident with access to water being a challenge as there are no fire hydrants in the area. Water tenders had to travel to Schriever SFB East Gate, as well as Cimarron Hills for water. The total size of this fire was approximately 2540 acres.
