I-70 Semi Tanker Fire MVC

On May 16th. 2024 at 09:26 Jeffcom 911 dispatched Golden Fire Department, Foothills Fire Protection District, Pleasant View Fire Department, Fairmount Fire Protection District and Stadium Medical to a motor vehicle collision with a possible semi tanker truck on fire and explosion at westbound I-70 at mile marker 259. Crews arrived to find a fully involved semi tanker accident involving several vehicles and fire spreading to the vegetation on Hwy. 40 with a rapid spread. Engine 24 started fire attack on the fuel trailer and vehicles on fire requested tenders to the scene for water supply. Engine 41 assisted with fire attack and Tender 563 arrived and supplied Engine 24 with water. The MVC involved a passenger vehicle and semi tanker hauling fuel which resulted in an explosion led to multiple vehicles catching on fire along with a grass fire on the downhill side of the highway. Hazmat teams were called to the scene for the additional clean-up. The driver of the semi truck was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed one person was killed in the crash. I-70 was closed in both directions for several hours into the evening.
