Hayman Fire
The Hayman Fire was reported on June 8th, 2002 which consumed 133 structures and burned 137,760 acres across Teller, Douglas, Jefferson, and Park counties with 5,340 people being evacuated. The fire was contained on July 18th, 2002. One civilian died in the fire and five firefighters lost their lives when they were en route and was involved in a traffic accident. The five were passengers in a van headed from Oregon to Colorado to help fight the Hayman fire. There was a total of 11 firefighters in the van and a caravan of 8 vans when the crash happen on a rural highway in Colorado. The Hayman was the largest fire in Colorado’s history with 137,760 acres until it was surpassed three times in 2020 by the Cameron Peak Fire, Pine Gulch Fire and the East Troublesome Fire.
