On July 30th, 2024, at 21:10 the Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District was dispatched to a reported fire at Deer Creek Canyon Rd. & Homewood Park Ave. Jeffcom advised about a quarter acre fire and a possible 2nd fire at Deer Creek Canyon Rd. & Grizzly Drive. Command requested the call upgraded to a working grass fire and mutual-aid from Elk Creek Fire Protection District and West Metro Fire Rescue. Crews arrived to see fire in dense oak brush, grass with steep terrain, and rattlesnakes. Command requested resources for structure protection and evacuations in the area with about 50 acres and the incident was named the Quarry Fire. Several strike teams were added and air support. The subdivisions of Deer Creek Mesa, Kuehster, Sampson, Hilldale Pines, Maxwell, McKinney Ranch, Murphy Gulch, Silver Ranch, Jennings, Homestead South & Silver Ranch South, Oehlmann and West Ranch had mandatory or pre-evacuations. With crews worked in high temperatures, 4 firefighters suffered heat exhaustion and one with a seizure. One patient was transported to a local hospital by Highland Rescue Medic 289 with unknown injuries. The fire burned 579 acres and is 100% as of August 7th, 2024 and no structures were lost. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported that the cause of the fire may be an arson investigation.
